Ancient Byzantine Icon Painting with the Prosopon School

Sun 10 Dec - Sat 16 Dec 2017

Over the course of  six days participants will be introduced to the contemplative practice of icon writing using the liquid egg tempera technique. The practice of crafting an icon will be enhanced by the study of the theological world view which has formed the art. Thus, the symbolic meaning of the iconic forms, the materials, and the steps of the process will be considered.

Through producing their own icon of Archangel Michael participants will encounter the world of spiritual beauty encapsulated by icons.

This introduction to liquid egg tempera techniques will also enhance existing artistic skills.

Arrival Sunday 10 December 4-6pm; course begins with supper at 6.30pm. Course ends on Saturday 16 December  with afternoon tea at 4pm.

Fully inclusive residential  single £730; Early bird before 31 July S£700

Fully inclusive residential shared £610 (per person);  Early bird 31 July £580

Non-residential (includes refreshments, suppers and lunches) £490;  Early bird 31 July £460

Please note: All meals are vegetarian or fish on this course, as is the custom in this work.

Materials extra: £77.00 payable to the tutor in cash.

Nikita Andreyev is an iconographer-instructor who has learned his craft through a lifetime immersion. For years he apprenticed to his father, Vladislav Andreyev; complimenting this experience with postgraduate theological studies in Paris and the United States.

As a member of the faculty team of the Prosopon School, Nikita has contributed to the development of unique teaching methods. The resulting workshop experience enables participants to create and grow through their icon making, developing spiritually through each icon. Since its founding in the 1980s, the School has rediscovered lost techniques of the ancient art of liquid egg tempera  and has helped ignite a renewed interest in icons across the USA and the western world. Contact  info@hawkwoodcollege.co.uk  for further details

The Saint Peter's Centre For Sacred Art Canterbury 2014

St Peter's is a beautiful medieval parish church in the middle of historic Canterbury, a very short distance from the Cathedral.

In 2013 members of the parish approached professional Kent based iconographer and teacher Peter Murphy to ask if he could begin tutoring icon painting classes using the church as a studio.

The initial three, week long courses in April, July and October 2013, were a spectacular success and resulted in the scheduling of additional courses for 2014. More importantly, these initial courses have led, with the approval of the Bishop of Dover, to the establishment of The St Peter's Centre For Sacred Art. The centre, in addition to running five more week long courses in 2014, will start to take students who wish to make a more comprehensive practical and theoretical study of iconography on a  full time basis with three days contact time each month form March of 2014.

For details of the two different types of course available, please click , 'One Week Courses 2014' or 'The Iconostasis Programme' in the menu at the website www.peterscourses.artweb.com or email for further information.
